Delhi Government Clears First Phase of 55-Kilometre Elevated Ring Road Corridor to Ease Traffic Congestion

The initial phase will cover the section from Azadpur to Ashram Chowk and will include the construction of two bridges across the Yamuna River. Authorities believe the project will significantly reduce the pressure on one of Delhi's busiest arterial roads and provide relief to millions of commuters.

According to official information, the Ring Road stretches for nearly 55 kilometres and experiences severe traffic congestion during peak hours. Despite the presence of several smaller flyovers, vehicles continue to move at a crawling pace during morning and evening rush hours. To address the issue, the Public Works Department formulated a plan to build six elevated corridors aimed at easing traffic flow across the city.

A study conducted by the Public Works Department found that constructing three elevated corridors between Azadpur and Ashram Chowk would face relatively fewer obstacles. However, the remaining three corridors are expected to encounter challenges because of limited space availability and the presence of Metro infrastructure.

Under the proposed plan, a 2.5-kilometre elevated corridor will be built between Chandgi Ram Akhada and Majnu Ka Tila. Another 10.5-kilometre corridor is planned between Ashram and Moti Bagh, while a 10-kilometre stretch will connect Moti Bagh and Rajouri Garden. A 13.5-kilometre corridor has also been proposed between Rajouri Garden and Pacific Mall in Pitampura.

The Delhi government is currently working on several infrastructure projects aimed at making the city free from traffic bottlenecks. Officials said the elevated corridor along the Ring Road is among the most significant initiatives, as the route witnesses some of the highest traffic volumes in the capital. Once completed, the project is expected to provide substantial relief and ensure smoother travel for millions of daily commuters across Delhi.
